Between 1979 until the Soviet troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989 there were no sieges of the city and the area was largely peaceful. Fighting was mainly in the country and in other cities. However following the collapse of Mohammad Najibullah's regime in April 1992, the city became an intense battleground. New insights and thorough research suggest that the so-called civil war was not really foremost a civil war but a war mainly incited by foreign powers, namely Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Uzbekistan.
