High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The term Battle of Kabul refers to a series of intermittent battles and sieges for the city since the Soviet intervention in 1979. Between 1979 until the Soviet troop withdrawal from Afghanistan in 1989 there were no sieges of the city and the area was largely peaceful. Fighting was mainly in the country and in other cities. However following the collapse of Mohammad Najibullah's regime in April 1992, the city became an intense battleground. New insights and thorough research suggest that the so-called civil war was not really foremost a civil war but a war mainly incited by foreign powers, namely Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Uzbekistan. These neighbors of Afghanistan were arming their Afghan proxy militias to destroy a peace agreement reached by the Afghan political parties after the fall of the communist regime.
