Israeli forces were subjected to a series of ambushes by fighters from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Twelve Israeli combatants, including three officers, were killed in the battle, as were three of the Palestinian attackers. The battle was referred to in Israel as "The attack in the worshipers route",Hebrew: ?????? ???? ?????????. In Arabic the attack became known as the Battle of Wadi an-Nasara (the Valley of the Christians), Arabic: ????? ???? ???????? "Ma’rakat Wadi an-Nasara”, after the place where the battle took place. The place where the attack took place became known as the "Alley of Death" both in Hebrew and Arabic.
