This is a list of Brazilian states by Human Development Index as included in the 2008 United Nations Development Program's Report, compiled on the basis of 2005 data and published on September 15, 2008. It covers the 26 Brazilian states, along with the Brazilian Federal District (a Statelike constitutional entity; it can not be divided in Municipalities). The average HDI of the Brazilian geographical regions are also included for comparison. The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and standards of living for regions worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the region is a developed, a developing or an underdeveloped country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life.
