The 1963 Togolese coup d'etat occurred on 13 January 1963 when military officers assassinated the first President of Togo, Sylvanus Olympio, and arrested most of his cabinet. The coup leaders (mainly Emmanuel Bodjolle, Etienne Eyadema and Kleber Dadjo) included members of the Togo military and ex-French soldiers who were unable to find positions in the small Togo military after leaving French service. Olympio was shot as he tried to gain entry into the American embassy in Lome, the capital of Togo. The coup leaders immediately brought Nicolas Grunitzky and Antoine Meatchi, both of whom were exiled political opponents of Olympio's rule, together to head a new government. Ghana was implicated in the coup and assassination of Olympio, but evidence was never fully gathered to support any allegations.
