Malayisation or Malayization (Malay: Pemelayuan or Melayuisasi or more commonly used term, Masuk Melayu) is a process in which people of different cultural and ethnic origins in Maritime Southeast Asia adopt Islam and Malay cultural identity. The process took place primarily in the pre-modern time Malay peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo and largely driven by the spread of Islam as well as the establishment of Malay sultanates and trading posts throughout the archipelago.
