Sarasota Chalk Festival is an American cultural event of public art that celebrates a performing art form of pavement art or also known as Italian street painting that dates from the sixteenth century. It was founded in 2007. During the festival artists use mainly chalk as their medium (occasionally special paint) and the road surface, which is public right-of-way, as their canvas to create large works of art while the viewer can watch the creative process. The festival is focused around the street artists who are known as Madonnari (singular form: Madonnaro) in Italy because historically, they recreated images of the Madonna. In the United States these artists are called Street Painters, Chalk Artists, Sidewalk Artists, or Pavement Artists. In Germany the title is Stra?enmaler or Pflastermaler, and in Great Britain the title is Sceevers.
