High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Jewish Community of Gdansk (Danzig) dates back at least to the 15th century. For many centuries it was separated from the rest of the city. Under Polish rule, Jews acquired limited rights in the city in the 16th and 17th centuries. After the incorporation into Prussia the community largely assimilated to German culture. Between the two world wars, during the period of the Free City of Danzig persecution of Jews in the region intensified after the Nazis came to power. During World War II and the Holocaust the community was virtually eliminated; currently it counts around 100 members and the city hosts an annual festival of Jewish culture.
