The award was first given following the 1951–52 season. Fred Hetzel of Davidson is the only player to have won the award three times (1963–65). Thirteen other players have won the award twice, most recently done by Stephen Curry of Davidson (2008–09). Curry chose to forgo his senior season and was drafted by the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA), eliminating the possibility of becoming just the second three-time winner.
