Inaugurated in 1933 by the reverends of St. Peter's, the matches receive significant media and supporter attention, with the 2012 match being the 78th encounter. The teams compete for the Reverend Friar Maurice Legoc Trophy, named for the tournament's founder. For the past 78 matches St. Joseph’s college have won 12 matches and 9 by St. Peter’s college. 57 matches end up in draw. In 2008 St. Joseph’s college won the match after 35 years and in 2010 St. Peter’s won the match after 32 years. In the series the highest score recorded by St Joseph’s college of 382 which they made in 1982 led by Ken Serpanchy with St. Peter’s college best being 345 for 9 in 1938 under Percy Perera.
