This was head coach Steve Fisher's tenth season at San Diego State. The Aztecs competed in the Mountain West Conference and played their home games at the Cox Arena. They finished the season 26–10, 11–5 in MWC play. They lost the championship game of the 2009 Mountain West Conference Men's Basketball Tournament to Utah which hurt their chances to get in the 2009 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, but instead they were invited to the 2009 National Invitation Tournament which they defeated Weber State, Kansas State, Saint Mary's and before losing in the semifinals to Baylor.
