The archaeology of metals (or as it is called today—archaeometallurgy) is a research branch of archaeology and is as old as the methodological archaeological research itself. The first stage in the study of ancient metals was arranging the finds according to shape, size, material, and function. At that stage the material was characterized mainly by surface color of the object, and the production mode was reconstructed by logical assumptions based upon the shape of the object. It was slightly later that metallurgical and metallographic analyses were incorporated in the typological study of ancient metals from the "Old World”.
