He was arrested in response to a request from the US under the UK Extradition Act 2003. He is the co-defendant with another British citizen Babar Ahmad, in a high profile case at the European Court of Human Rights: they have appealled against their extradition to the US. Both men are accused by the US of terrorism-related offences arising out of an alleged involvement over the period of 1997 to 2004 with a series of websites, one of which was located on a server in the United States. As a result of a UK parliamentary petition raising over 140,000 signatures the case sparked a discussion in the House of Commons among Members of Parliament late in 2011.
