The name come from the weekly podcast featuring filmmaker Kevin Smith and his long-time producing partner Scott Mosier then began in February 2007. The name was derived from taking the first letters of "Smith" and "Mosier" and replacing the "P" in podcast. The podcast was originally distributed through Smith's entertainment website Quick Stop Entertainment. Once Smith bought the site name he migrated the podcast to SModcast.com, then added a second podcast, Highlands: A Peephole History, and a third, Tell 'Em Steve-Dave!.
