High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Bisaya are an indigenous people of the north-west and the coast line of Borneo, Malaysia. They mostly live near the Beaufort district, the river Padas in the Sabah region and along the river Limbang in the northern state Sarawak. They are also known as Malay or Islam along other peoples such as the Dusun, the Murut , Lun Bawang/Lun Dayeh and the Rungus. The Bisaya were the first people in Borneo to accept the Islam as their religion in the thirteenth century. Nowadays the Bisaya living in Sabah are mostly Muslims while the Bisaya living in Sarawak are Christians. There are also some Bisaya living in Kampung Manunggang, Sabahan, which follow no religion. The first known leader of the Bisaya was Awang Alak Betatar who after his conversion to the Islam was known as Muhammad Shah. They may be distantly related to the Bisaya people of the Philippines.
