The East Tennessee bridge-burning conspiracy was a Civil War-era guerrilla warfare operation carried out by Union sympathizers in Confederate-occupied East Tennessee in 1861. The operation, which was planned by Carter County minister, William B. Carter (1820–1902), and authorized by President Abraham Lincoln, called for the destruction of nine railroad bridges and the subsequent invasion of the region by Union forces from southeastern Kentucky. While the pro-Union conspirators managed to destroy five of the nine targeted bridges, the Union Army reneged on its half of the plan, and did not invade East Tennessee until 1863, nearly two years after the incident.
