He has captained the England cricket team in Test and One Day International cricket since 2009. He has scored centuries (100 or more runs in a single innings) on nineteen occasions in Test cricket, and six times in One Day International (ODI) matches. In 2005, he was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year for his performances the previous year, in which he made his debut and, according to Wisden's Jon Henderson, advanced "from tyro to stalwart". He was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2006 as part of England's 2005 Ashes winning squad.
