High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Townsend Foster Dodd (March 6, 1886 – October 5, 1919) was the first commissioned American Army Aviator. As a University of Illinois graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering he joined the Coast Artillery Corps and shortly thereafter became an aviator in the Army Air Service. Dodd was a member of many boards of review during the beginning of the US Army Air Service and was one of the board that condemned pusher planes in favour of tractors. He served with General John Pershing on the Mexican Border where he set records for endurance flying. During WWI he was first assigned as the Aviation Officer of the American Expeditionary Force in 1917. He was later replaced by Colonel Billy Mitchell and was reassinged to Bolling Mission.
