The Anglican Church of Papua New Guinea became an autonomous province of the Anglican Communion in 1976 when the Province of Papua New Guinea became independent from the Province of Queensland in the Church of England in Australia (as the Anglican Church of Australia was officially named until 1981) following Papua New Guinea's independence from Australia in 1975. At this time the official name of the church was changed to Anglican. The first Archbishop of Papua New Guinea and Primate was the Most Revd Sir David Hand, the Bishop of Port Moresby. The current Primate is Archbishop Joseph Kopapa, who is based in the Anglican National Office in Lae. Before his election to the primacy, Archbishop Kopapa was Bishop of Popondota.
