This book brings together Alfred Stieglitz's photographs of New York City for the first time since 1932, when Stieglitz showcased them at his midtown gallery, An American Place. When Stieglitz's parents moved to East 60th Street between Fifth and Madison Avenues in 1871, their new townhouse was surrounded by empty lots and dirt roads. But by 1930, when Stieglitz spent his days at An American Place---only a few blocks from where he grew up---he was surrounded by skyscrapers. The city had transformed from a Gilded Age showplace to the archetypal twentieth-century metropolis, and Stieglitz chronicled this transition by photographing New York throughout his adult life.As a young man, Stieglitz walked the city streets with a handheld camera, capturing the change "from Old to New" in picturesque compositions shrouded in snow, rain, and the dark of night. Later on, when he was first exhibiting Cubist and abstract art at his gallery 291, Stieglitz struggled to incorporate these radical concepts into his images of the city. Towards the end of his life, he photographed only from the windows of his midtown apartment and gallery, revealing a New York seen from above---a view that in its day was still unfamiliar. More important, however, than documenting a time and place, Stieglitz sought to express his deepest emotions. As his wife, Georgia O'Keeffe, famously remarked, "Stieglitz was always photographing himself."Stieglitz photographed New York's breath-taking harbor skyline, the then-infamous Flatiron Building at Madison Square, and the towers of Rockefeller Center, the only construction project still underway during the Depression. This intimate volume shows the rise of a modern city from the personal perspective of one of the twentieth century's greatest photographers. The Seaport Museum New York is an unconventional history museum that celebrates the extraordinary intersection of land and water that caused the great city to take root in Lower Manhattan. Experience history first-hand and discover the ongoing story of New York City---its boldness, creativity, and diversity---through exhibitions, sailing excursions, landmark buildings, and historic ships on the site of the city's original port.
