They were founded in 1949 and currently play at Estadio Municipal de Chaves with a capacity of 19,000 one of the biggest in the Liga de Honra. Their home kit is red and blue striped t-shirt with blue shorts and socks and the away kit is all white. Their current president is Mario Carneiro and their current manager is Tulipa. In the 2007/08 season they finished 4th just missing out on promotion to the Liga de Honra. GD Chaves have been in the Portuguese First Division 13 times and have done expectionally well finishing 5th in the 1989/90 season which was their best ever finish.
