High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Presidential Council was a triumvirate system of government in the Republic of Dahomey (present-day Benin) from 7 May 1970 until 26 October 1972. The Presidential Council included Hubert Maga (former president of the republic from 1960-1963), Justin Ahomadegbe-Tometin (a former prime minister of the republic), and Sourou-Migan Apithy (former president of the republic from 1964-1965) as equal members of a council to decide on most affairs of the state. The system was developed as a compromise following the 1970 presidential elections which threatened the Republic of Dahomey with the prospects of secession by the different regions and possibly civil war. As a compromise, the three main contenders in the election agreed to form the Presidential Council, divide ministerial assignments between them, and rotate the position of President between them every two years.
