High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The 1992 European Community Monitor Mission helicopter downing was an incident that occurred during the Croatian War of Independence in which a European Community Monitor Mission helicopter carrying five European observers was downed by a Yugoslav People's Army fighter jet, in the air space above Novi Marof, Croatia. Four Italian military officers were killed, as was one French officer. Following the incident, Yugoslav authorities replaced the head of the air force, and the defence minister abruptly resigned. The events followed the end of the first stage of the war in Croatia and closely preceded the country's international recognition. The fighter pilot, Emir Sisic, was cleared by the Yugoslav authorities, but not by Croatia and Italy, and was later apprehended abroad and served prison time, before being released in 2008.
