High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Duchy of Wurttemberg was a state in south-west of Germany, Member of the Holy Roman Empire from 1495 to 1806. The dukedom survived mainly because it was larger than its immediate neighbours. However, it was often under pressure during the Protestant Reformation from the Holy Roman Empire and from repeated French invasions in the 17th and 18th centuries. Wurttemberg happened to be in the path of French and Austrian armies engaged in the long rivalry between House of Bourbon and House of Habsburg. In 1803, Napoleon raised the duchy to the Electorate of Wurttemberg of the Holy Roman Empire but then, when he abolished the Empire in 1806, the Electorate was elevated to the Kingdom of Wurttemberg.
