The Volunteers played their home games at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, and competed in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The team was coached by Derek Dooley, who was in his 3rd season with Tennessee. On November 18, 2012 coach Dooley was fired after 11 games with a losing record of 15—21 and 4—19 in the SEC. After being blown out by Vanderbilt 18-41 Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart said "Derek Dooley improved Tennessee football during his three-year tenure as the Volunteers' coach — just not enough to keep the job.".
