The twelfth tropical cyclone and twelfth named storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, Leslie developed from a tropical wave located more than 1,100 miles (1,800 km) east of the Windward Islands on August 30. About six hours later, it strengthened into a tropical storm. Tracking steadily west-northwestward, Leslie slowly intensified due to only marginally favorable conditions.
