He is the Democratic U.S Representative-elect for Pennsylvania's 17th congressional district and will be sworn in on January 3, 2013. Cartwright defeated 10-term incumbent Blue Dog Congressman Tim Holden, the dean of the Pennsylvania Congressional delegation, in the Democratic primary on April 24, 2012, by a 57%-43% margin.
