Kharas worked as a bureaucrat with the United Nations and as assistant deputy chairman of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, before becoming involved with media. Kharas directed and produced "The Three Amigos", a series of twenty animated public service announcements in multiple languages designed to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. The series was been awarded the George Foster Peabody Award as well as other awards. He also produced the series "Buzz and Bite", a series of malaria prevention videos, as well as "No Excuses" an animated series about domestic violence. Kharas has received United Nations Peace Medal and the medal of the World Federation of United Nations Associations.
