It was founded by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1823. It is close to York Minster. The current headmaster is Jonathan Taylor. The school's motto Membra Sumus Corporis Magni means "We are members of a great body", quoting Seneca the Younger (Epistle 95, 52).
