An exploration of the practices of art and architecture of the 20th and early 21st centuries, "Architecture as Performance: the construction of display" unfolds a theoretical and practical approach to understanding the concept of performance (in the broad sense) in relation to these two specific fields of cultural production. This thesis reshapes the notion of (cultural) performance to include parameters of the performative and of performativity derived from the spaces and objects that we share, and that are projected by architects and artists. If performance needs to be "designed" (or at least desired), then this dissertation considers and expands upon the implications of space and object discourse within the field of performance studies.
