I have expanded my reading habits to now include "chick authors” ….GASP! Stella Rimington, Patricia Cornwell and now…. Nikki French… Ok the Cornwell book was a shocker, the Rimington book wasn’t bad and this latest one from Nicci French was enjoyable. ‘Losing You’ is set on a small island where a mother and her two kids are preparing to go on holiday to Florida. The only problem for Nina Landry is that her 15 year old daughter, Charlie, hasn’t returned home and local police see no reason to panic. But Nina isn’t convinced and she starts frantically searching for her daughter. The more she digs, the more she discovers that people on this island aren’t who she thought they were. What follows is a frantic race against time as Nina searches high and low to find out what could possibly have happened to her daughter. And when the body of another young girl turns up dead, Nina realises just how important it is to find her daughter …. SOON. I didn’t expect to get caught up in the emotional side of a mother panicking to find her daughter but the story is sufficiently compelling to string you along. The book and characters themselves were very ‘understated’ (for want of a better word). This contributed a lot to them being much more believable when you looked at them and watched them evolve. One criticism I did have of the book was that it never really kicked up a gear and stayed in the same level of intensity from start to finish. I thought about this a bit afterwards and realised that it never really went into the circumstances that led to the conclusion. Basically we reached a conclusion without going into many details about WHY the conclusion had been reached.
