Naples, 1926 Rocco Campobello, the great tenor - one of the most revered entertainers in the world - lies beneath the surgeon's knife after collapsing on stage. While his socialite American wife fumes with impatience, Campobello emerges from this brush with death a changed man: a fallen, but enlightened colossus. He casts off the mantle of celebrity and embarks on a journey into his dark and sinister past. After meeting the widow of his closest childhood friend, he is drawn back to his impoverished early life in Naples, and brought face to face with his early ruthlessness and treachery - ghosts he now seeks to lay to rest. Meanwhile, his attempts to free himself are frustrated by a powerful criminal chieftain who has overseen his progress from the early years. The menacing Don Graziani has much to lose if the tenor's career falls apart, and now, in liaison with Campobello's wife, conspires to re-launch the great voice in splendid fashion. Persuasion gives way to brutal blackmail as a means to force the tenor to go along with their plans, so that he is compelled to hatch a dangerous counter plot of his own in order to outmanoeuvre them. The Master's Voice is set as much within the palatial environment of a 1920s superstar, as within the ancient, crime-ridden back alleys of Naples. The tale weaves a path through a world of celebrity glamour, stinging violence, musical supremacy and scarred psyches. And as the drama unfolds, we cannot mask the sound of jackboots on the streets, children's voices raised in Fascist song - the dark cloud of totalitarianism that is changing the face of Italy.
