In 1912, when Dr. Albert C. Barnes acquired his first work by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919), French poet and critic Guillaume Apollinaire described the artist as "the greatest painter of our time and one of the greatest painters of all times." A few years later, the Paris-based, American-born connoisseur Leo Stein (who corresponded frequently with Dr. Barnes) wrote that "Renoir lovers are insatiable collectors of his pictures." Dr. Barnes was no exception, and today the Barnes collection holds 181 works by Renoir. Thirteen classic oil paintings were selected for reproduction in this wall calendar.
