Its alumni include politicians, lawyers, bishops, poets, and academics. Some alumni went on to become Fellows of the college; 14 students later became Principal of the college. The college was founded in 1571 by Queen Elizabeth I, at the request of a Welsh clergyman, Hugh Price. The college still has strong links with Wales, and about 15% of students are Welsh. The Jesus Professor of Celtic, which is the only chair in Celtic Studies at an English university, is associated with a Professorial Fellowship of Jesus College. Distinguished Celtic scholars, such as John Rhys and Ellis Evans, have held the position since its creation in 1877. About 100 undergraduates and 60 to 70 post-graduates are admitted to the college each year.
