To preserve, so far as possible, the spirit and style of the original, has been the translator's aim in presenting, for the first time to English readers, Count Tolstoi's great novel "Anna Karenina." After the present translation was begun, an anonymous French paraphrase appeared. In order to hasten the preparation of this volume for the press, that version has been used in a few passages, but always with the Russian original at hand.
