The high tech concept began to be applied to architecture in the late 1970's when people started to talk about a style that included cutting-edge technological and industrial elements in the construction of buildings and residential properties, as a late branch of Anglo-Saxon architectural modernism. One of the first well-known appearances of the term was in the publication High Tech: The Industrial Style and Source Book for the Home, by Joan Kron and Suzanne Slesin, which had a major impact at the time and made the concept fashionable. The paradigmatic and foundational example of this trend in architecture was indisputably established with the Pompidou Center (1977) by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers. The exposed ventilation pipes and outdoor escalators established the model for a style that has been evolving ever since. It is not hard to understand that the advances and applications that struck people as so tremendously high tech 30 years ago have become obsolete today. However, what keeps the term and the precepts it implies alive is its spirit: the desire to integrate technological progress in a project and make it very visible in the design, even though the solutions that defined the style at the time have evolved and are no longer the same. If we had to sketch a brief list of characteristics that high tech buildings share today - and of which the projects that appear in this volume provide an abundant sample - we would begin by saying that a high tech work seeks lightness of materials and in many cases transparency. Also, it usually employs glass in facades and incorporates sophisticated computer systems, both to satisfy the needs of the occupants in the field in which they work (if it involves an office block or lab, for example) and to optimize the internal bioclimatic conditions or to save energy. As a matter of fact, the biggest technological advances over the past decade have been aimed at environmental efficiency. The present volume shows many of the most outstanding technological advances on the contemporary architectural scene, which will probably end up being included in buildings and residential properties of the future as a matter of course.
