This is the first comprehensive publication to present one of the oldest collections of Siberian and Russian-American (Alaskan) artifacts, which has been in the possession of the University of Gottingen since the 18th century. It was donated by one of its illustrious graduates, Baron Georg Thomas von Asch, who worked as a physician in St. Petersburg. The more than 180 ethnographic objects described here in detail represent some of the earliest surviving finds from Russia's "Far North" and the neighboring regions of Asia. Even before the area was colonized and its indigenous cultures subjected to permanent change, Asch's ethnographic collection conveyed a vivid picture of the "Small Peoples of the North", their lifestyles and artistic traditions. Famous scientists have contributed to this volume, making it an essential standard work for all those concerned with the ancient cultures of Siberia and Alaska.
