Tulip, former prisoner, lives in Harlem, after the war, furnished in a sordid. Its only friends another emigrant, Uncle Nat, race imprecise, and the latter's daughter, Leni. White tulip is bankrupt, who admits, proclaims, mime his capitulation. He tries to break away from all that was sacred to him and remains and takes refuge in cynicism. Realistic even in parody, juggling with both millennia with all the "good words" never-ending, this novel was born nihilistic world of 1945 where people came to "win" a war whose very atrocity was a defeat has lost none of his qualities of news. There is a moral to this satire of idealism by an idealist: it is impossible to despair.
