Abandoned at an early age, Oliver is forced to live in a dark and dismal workhouse lorded over by Mr Bumble who cheats the boys of their meagre rations. Desperate but determined, Oliver escapes. But what he discovers on the streets of Londons underworld makes the workhouse look like a picnic.
