Marxism–Leninism is a communist ideology, officially based upon the theories of Marxism and Vladimir Lenin, that promotes the development and creation of a international communist society through the leadership of a vanguard party over a revolutionary socialist state that represents a dictatorship of the proletariat. Marxist-Leninist society seeks to purge anything considered bourgeois, idealist, or religious from it. It supports the creation of a single-party state, which in practice led to the establishment of authoritarian regimes; some leaders opposed this system, such as Alexander Dubcek and Mikhail Gorbachev, who tried to reform socialism in their respective countries.
