It was formed in 1971 from the merger of E S Livingstone, Edinburgh, Scotland, and J A Churchill, London, England. It is but now integrated with the rest of Elsevier's health science division. Responsible for publishing a number of classic medical texts including Sir William Osler's textbook The Principles and Practice of Medicine. The imprint is also responsible for the publication of practical texts on treatments that skeptics consider of questionable clinical efficacy, such as David Owen's homeopathy textbook Principles and practice of homeopathy: The therapeutic and healing process and Peter E.
