The Gunners won the league by one point, but were mathematically confirmed champions two games before the end of the season, following a dramatic 4-0 win over Everton. Ten days after the end of the season, Arsenal were at Wembley competing with Newcastle in the 1998 FA Cup Final. Goals from Marc Overmars and Dennis Bergkamp got Arsenal their second trophy of the season. Arsenal even came close to a treble, bowing out of the 1997–98 Football League Cup semi-finals after a 2-1 home win against Chelsea and a 1–3 loss at Stamford Bridge. Arsenal came nowhere near to winning the UEFA Cup, however, losing 2–1 on aggregate in the first round to Greek side PAOK Salonika after a 1–0 defeat in Greece thanks to Kostas Frantzeskos and 1-1 draw at Highbury with an early Dennis Bergkamp goal and a late equaliser...
