It is native to Europe and it is known in some other parts of the world, including the west coast of the United States, as an introduced species. It often grows in rocky habitat. In developed environments it is a "wall specialist", easily taking hold in historic stone walls. It is an annual herb producing lightly hairy, very thin, erect stems 15 to 25 centimeters tall. The stem is ringed with whorls of six narrow leaves each a few millimeters long, often reflexed down toward the stem.
