The Principality of Polotsk, also known as the Kingdom of Polotsk or the Duchy of Polotsk (Belarusian: Полацкае княства; Russian: Полоцкое княжество) was a medieval principality of the Early East Slavs, and was considered one of the constituent principalities within the Kievan Rus', although with a wide degree of autonomy. It was established around the ancient town of Polotsk by the tribal union of Krivichs. It is uncertain the date of the state establishment and the earliest mentioned of Polotsk dates to the mid 9th century as part of Novgorod. In the second half of 10th century Polotsk was governed by its own dynasty the first ruler of which that is mentioned in the history was a semi-legendary Rogvolod (? - 978).
