In 2008 it became an open access journal through the sponsorship by the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS). The journal is international, with its editors and referees located all around the world. However, the management is performed by NIMS (Tsukuba, Japan). From 2008, the journal is published on-line and printed by the Institute of Physics. The printed volumes are distributed free of charge by NIMS and the Institute of Physics editorial staff.
