To properly secure the communication between a client and a server, the client requests a digital certificate from the server; once the server sends the certificate, the client examines it, uses it to encrypt the communication, and proceeds with the normal request-response conversation. However, in a virtual hosting scenario, several domains -- each with its own potentially distinct certificate -- are hosted on one server. In this case, the server has no way of knowing beforehand which certificate to send to the client.
