White Russia or White Ruthenia (Belarusian: Белая Русь,Belaya Rus,"White Rus") is a name that has historically been applied to a part of the wider region of Ruthenia or Rus', most often to that which roughly corresponds to the eastern part of present-day Belarus including the cities of Polatsk, Vitsyebsk and Mahiliou. In English, the use of the term "White Russia" to refer to all of Belarus is dated. Many other languages, however, continue to use a literal translation of "White Russia" to refer to Belarus. The term "White Russian" may also refer to the White movement or White emigres, things unrelated to Belarus. Some people in Belarus consider the name "White Russia" to be derogatory because of the verbal association of their country with Russia.
