It was the first residential college established at the University of Queensland and the ninth college nationally. Emmanuel College is the third largest of the UQ colleges with a capacity of 340 students (Gatton Halls of Residence, University of Queensland is 100 places bigger with a capacity of 440 and Union College is only just larger with a capacity of 341). Students living at Emmanuel College study for a wide range of degrees and are encouraged to excel academically through the college's extensive tutorial program. As well as academia, students at Emmanuel participate in a wide range of men's and women's sports and compete against the other UQ Colleges for the annual Inter-College Cup (ICC).
