This publication is based on the data of national banks and governments collected by International Currency Identification Service "System Interchange" (Germany). All the banknotes described in this reference book are presented in colour. There are indications of security features intended to prevent banknotes' counterfeiting. The present edition contains information on 173 national currencies of 191 states and 49 territories of the world. Information on banknotes in circulation as of January 1, 2002 is arranged in alphabetic order of the names of states and territories possessing a special administrative or governmental status. Each reference to a country (territory) contains official and popular names of the state (dependency of a domain/territory), indication of the emission institution, official names of currencies, notes on peculiarities of the banknotes' circulation in the country (its dependencies) or on territories of some states incorporated into regional, economic and other associations. Banknotes withdrawn from circulation as of January 1, 2002 are presented in a separate subsection of the reference book.
