This publication brings together four texts which analyse from different perspectives a common theme: the complex and at the same time determining role of the photographic image in the pictorial work of Gerhard Richter (Dresden, 1932), in particular with regard to the relationship between this corpus and the archive or compendium of images - for the most part photographic - which, under the name Atlas, the German artist has been building up since 1962.
