Lucian Freud is a painter of the body at rest. He is, as he likes to remind people, a biologist. He paints, draws and etches heads and bodies - predominantly the human kind, but frequently the animal kind. His interest is in truth-telling. But he brings to this apparently straightforward purpose an extraordinary sensitivity to what is involved in occupying a body: the sensation, the emotion, the intelligence, the bloom, the inevitable dissipation. All this he refuses to think about in general terms. Rather, he has wanted to set down very specific truths about what it is like to occupy this particular body in this particular situation over this particular period of time.
